What is crack? Crack is a form of cocaine that has been processed with baking soda or ammonia and water to make it vaporizable. Crack first became popular in the 1980s, when the purer "crack" form of cocaine was first introduced into neighborhoods around Los Angeles. Today, it continues to be one of the most addictive drugs around. The word "crack" may refer to both the drug and its paraphernalia; for example, someone might say they are about to enjoy smoking some crack if they're referring to smoking some crack cocaine. The name "crack" comes from how cracks made on the surface resemble those seen in ceramic glaze that often come during kiln-firing at high temperature. Crack is most often smoked in a water pipe, although it can be smoked in a freebase form when freebase form of cocaine is introduced to baking soda or ammonia and water mixture. Baking soda has been used in place of ammonia since the late 1800s when cocaine was first extracted from coca leaves. This technique with baking soda can be seen today in South American nations where crack is most popular. The addition of ammonia into the mixture causes the cocaine to vaporize, creating bubbles that are inhaled into the lungs with each breath. The resulting high would rival that of "mainline" cocaine. Precisely how "crack" was produced became a matter of dispute. Various theories emerged about how crack developed, with some claiming that crack was not an entirely new drug, but rather simply another type of cocaine that had been taken to an extreme by dealers to increase sales. Others contended that crack was developed by cocaine labs in South America, while still others claimed that the drug was developed in the United States by accident or on purpose. Crack's reputation began to change around the year 2000 when it became known for its high purity and low price. Today, it is possible to buy small vials of crack for as little as $100 (US). The more expensive, purer forms of crack (a vial selling for $300 and up) can be very addictive and more dangerous than freebase or powder cocaine. Although the process is imprecise, the production of crack cocaine begins with cocaine hydrochloride (HCl). HCl is a salt of cocaine that requires some chemical manipulation to isolate the desired substance. As such, it is not typically available in its natural form in illicit markets, since it requires extensive lab equipment to produce. It is commonly encountered when large amounts of cocaine are seized by law enforcement agencies in various countries that have laws against trafficking in illegal drugs. It is sometimes encountered in the form of crack rocks, which are rocks containing crack cocaine. Cracking is a commonly used method to produce freebase cocaine, but is very dangerous if done with impure chemicals. To create crack, HCl must be converted into freebase cocaine through a process called basification, which involves mixing it with an alkaline substance (like baking soda). Freebase cocaine has properties similar to other non-salt forms of cocaine. For example, in one part of the process, after the mixing step when HCl is mixed with baking soda to turn it into freebase cocaine by basification, hot liquid CO2 or ammonia broth are poured over it repeatedly. eccc085e13
